BIOGRAPHY
My name is Clara Applewhaite Mitchell a Printmaker/Textile Artist, born in Trinidad, living in the New Jersey area. I think of myself first, as a native of the Caribbean and second, as a citizen of the world. I offer a lifetime experience in the Arts and over 10 years experience in the Textile Industry with a strong background in Printmaking.
My designs are bold, yet vivid, while they capture and interpret Caribbean, European, African and Native American themes- both past and present. The subject matter is portrayed with a simple boldness, paying attention to line and composition.
I describe these designs as ‘wearable art’, and execute them on various natural fibers. At present, I use silk because of its natural luminous quality, which brings each piece into a life of its own. Silk is also the fabric of choice, because of its soft ‘hand’, luxurious drapability, and eternal beauty.
The pieces may be worn throughout the year, or used as wall adornments in the home.
I dedicate this body of work, to Norma, Charles, Claudia, Curtis, Jeanelle, Elise
and to the many who have encouraged and supported me thus far.
In the words of Trinidadian painter, Leroy Clarke -
'the beauty of this respect
lies quietly like sap
in the strongest tree
my own mother...
in others too, whose love
washed me in their light...
woman I am your daughter...
I am the sister, the wife,
the mother, the warrior,
your friend.
Thank you all,
Clara.
